2. PageRank (PR) – a Google special algorithm
PageRank (PR) is a special algorithm which the Google search engine uses for site evaluation. Its calculation is based mainly on the number and quality of links leading to certain contents from external sources (as defined by the algorithm authors: the more valued a site is, the more people refer to it and put links to it on their sites). PageRank can vary from 0 to 10.
Although it has only little effect on site rankings in the Google search engine, it is every webmaster’s dream to achieve the highest possible PageRank. Unfortunately, only few sites worldwide have managed to reach the highest score (these are, among others, Google.com, Apple.com, Adobe.com).
Some methods have been developed, however, which artificially pump up the PageRank value of a site. This is because a high PR encourages web users to buy SEO links on such a site – and links from sites highly valued by a search engine are much more valuable and contribute more significantly to your site’s assessment than those from less meaningful sites.
Be careful here. There are plenty of crooks in the Internet who take advantage of the naivety and ignorance of some webmasters, and overstate the PageRank value of their sites to sell SEO links.

| Google Page Rank |
Such an effect can be achieved by using a simple PHP script. By electronic sleight of hand, any user who wants to check a site’s PageRank is falsely shown the ranking value of a completely different site - e.g. www.google.com.
By this subterfuge, it is possible that a newly created and unknown site could achieve a PR of 10. But the trick has more drawbacks than advantages and easily comes unstuck.
When it tries to index such a site, a search engine robot sees a completely different site (the one with the false PageRank value) and cannot index the real site’s contents. As a result, the search engine actually displays a foreign site in the domain of the site resorting to such a trick.
The deception is short-lived too. A false PageRank usually survives only until the next update.
